A very good near-A4 sized unpaginated hardback book. Full title is: "A Calendar for the Year 1923 Containing Twelve Plates Representing the Twelve Ages of Man Which Appeared in a Book of Hours Printed by Thielman Kerver in Paris in MCXXII. They were Reprinted by his Widow, Yolande Bonhomme, from which Edition the Woodcuts have been Reproduced". On the front endpaper is pasted an erratum slip: "Title Page. MCXXII in line 9 should read MDXXII". Signed on the front endpaper by Leonard C Boileau, otherwise unmarked and virtually unworn. Consists of a woodcut on the left page, with facing, a calendar for the corresponding month in 1923 with notable events which occurred on each day. Also present is a loose laid in two-page "letter" introducing the book. All printed on fine paper in Benedictine typeface using letterpress, by George Jones at the Sign of the Dolphin, Fleet Street. A beautifully prepared and produced gem of a book.

The biography of Olga Ivinskaya, who was Boris Pasternak's closest companion from 1946 to his death in 1960. Encompassing the writing of Doctor Zhivago, for which Olga was the model for Lara, the book describes what literary life was like under Stalin and, later, Khrushchev. Translated by Max Hayward.

Rounded off with six-pages of biographies of the artists, and finally a two-page index. ** Page 36 features a charcoal drawing by Will Roberts of Melyn tinplate workers....my Great Grandfather, who I well remember as a child, was one of those, a folder...I wonder if he was in this picture?
