100 Years of the Chemistry of Life. ASBMB Centennial History., Ralph A Bradshaw, Charles C Hancock & Nicole Kresge
1 100 Years of the Chemistry of Life. ASBMB Centennial History. Ralph A Bradshaw, Charles C Hancock & Nicole Kresge
ASBMB. 2009 1893571092 / 9781893571099 Hard Cover As New Very Good
A fine 522 page hardback book. Book is entirely unmarked and unworn, could pass for new; DJ has just a touch of corner rub. 16 chapters in four parts, 4 appendices, ndex. Many photographs and a few figures. In the closing days of 1906, a group of 29 scientists, led by John Jacob Abel of Johns Hopkins University, met in the parlor of the newly opened Belmont Hotel on Park Avenue in New York City. United by their common interests in chemical biology, they unanimously voted to form the American Society of Biological Chemists (ASBC). This charter group, joined by 52 like-minded individuals, who were unable to attend the New York City meeting, organized their first meeting in the spring of 1907, launching the ASBC. These events separated biochemistry from physiology as a distinct scientific pursuit. Despite a change in name to the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) and a tremendous growth in membership, the Society continued to follow the vision of its founders in fostering one of the most productive areas of human scientific investigation. The ASBC's acquisition of the independently-initiated Journal of Biological Chemistry, the Society's confederation in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), the subsequent establishment of a permanent headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, the contributing role of the Society in forming the International Union of Biochemistry (eventually IUBMB), and the award of almost 100 Nobel Prizes to the ASBC/ASBMB's members represent only a select few of the Society's more important accomplishments. These and many other events, and the individuals primarily responsible for them, are recorded in this volume, which was prepared in celebration of the 100th anniversary of that first meeting in New York City.

A Greater look at Greater Buffalo, Jim Bisco.
3 A Greater look at Greater Buffalo Jim Bisco.
Windsor Publications. 1986 First Edition. Hard Cover Near Fine. Very Good Signed by Author
A great lump of a book - slightly larger than A4, weighing 2320g. Presentation inscription signed by the author on front endpaper, otherwise unmarked. Book is virtually unworn, DJ has a 1" tear at top of rear flap fore-edge. 16 chapters, bibliography, index, over 400 colour photographs. A brief history of the city from its origins as a Seneca trading post, it's growth, followed by its decline in the early 70s. The balance of the book details its renaissance from then until the present time. I spent some time in Buffalo in the mid 70s and can confirm that wandering the streets in the usual carefree European manner was a risky business only attempted once!
