Cardiganshire County History Vol 1: From the Earliest Times to the Coming of the Normans., J L Davis & D P Kirby, editors.
6 Cardiganshire County History Vol 1: From the Earliest Times to the Coming of the Normans. J L Davis & D P Kirby, editors.
University of Wales Press. 1994 0708311709 / 9780708311707 First Edition. Hardcover Very Good Very Good
A very good A4-sized 441 page hardback book with owner's name on front endpaper, otherwise unmarked. Book is virtually unworn, DJ has very light rub along top edge. Book is slightly skewed due to poor shelving - this will slowly recover now that the book is properly shelved. 13 chapters in two parts, viz "Land & Environment" and "Archaeology & History". 31 plates, 74 figures, 4 tables, 15 contributors. This is the first volume to appear in the prestigious County History which is being prepared by the Cardiganshire Antiquarian Society. The completed History will consist of three scholarly and handsome volumes designed to present the history of the ancient County from the earliest times to the present day. This volume, for which the editors have brought together a team of eminent scholars, begins with the physical background of the County, its geology and geography and its flora and fauna, and traces the slow emergence of Man in prehistoric times. It reconstructs, from evidence much of which has only recently been uncovered, the extent and character of the Roman occupation, and the routes by which the Romans came in pursuit of their military purposes and imperial designs. It traces the slow emergence of the ancient kingdom of Ceredigion, the nature of its economic and social organization and the growth of its political structures. In this volume also the coming of Christianity, the origins of the churches and the significance of their dedications are fully explored. The volume ends with the coming of the Normans. A unique feature of the volume is that it contains authoritative lists and inventories of the County's prehistoric and Roman remains and early Christian monuments and the 'finds' associated with them. Many of these are illustrated with line-drawings and photographs, as in the inventories of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales - Indeed, both in respect of its scholarship and its production, this volume is worthy to stand alongside the most recent publications of the Royal Commission. This is the first comprehensive and scholarly history of prehistoric and early Cardiganshire. Its launch brings to fruition what many generations of Cardiganshire people have longed for - a County History worthy of comparison with the best county histories hitherto published in England and Wales. Archaeologists and historians generally will find much to interest them in this fascinating volume on a hitherto neglected part of the country.

South-East Dyfed Minerals: A Survey of the Archaeological Resource Threatened by Mineral Extraction" March 1994: In Two Parts - Part 1., K Murphy and P Sambrook.
14 South-East Dyfed Minerals: A Survey of the Archaeological Resource Threatened by Mineral Extraction" March 1994: In Two Parts - Part 1. K Murphy and P Sambrook.
Cadw. 1994 First Edition. Paperback Very Good No Jacket
Clean and sound except that the first page is beginning to come adrift from the glue holding the text block into the cover. No inscriptions or other marks, minimal shelfwear. Approximately 42 pages of A4, printed on one side only, followed by 27 maps, some A4, some folded A3. Some of the maps are beginning to escape from the glue as well - perfect binding is far from being what its name suggests!! Apparently this is a report which remains unpublished according to some sources. The purpose of this project is to gain more information on the sites and monuments and associated landscapes of SE Dyfed threatened by mineral extraction. This will enable the Trust and Cadw to assess their relative importance and provide a consistent and objective basis for planning advice. Initially, a desk top study was carried out. The information gained from this was supported by field visits to rapidly assess the present state of the archaeological resource. In total, about 850 new sites were identified and examined. Many other sites which were recorded only through documentary sources on Dyfed Archaeological Trust's Sites and Monuments Record also benefited from a field visit. The greatest number and highest density of sites were recorded on Carboniferous limestone and millstone grit. The vast majority of these sites are associated with the limestone extraction and burning industry. The number and density of archaeological sites on the coal measures was far lower. Here, though, there is a greater range of archaeological sites and a greater diversity in the historic landscape. Except for the working areas of large quarries, all the land with planning permission for quarrying was examined. Because of lack of time, it was not possible to visit all the sites which British Coal have designated as areas of future interest. However, an approximately equal amount of ground was examined in the field, in the limestone/millstone grit part of the survey and in the coal-field survey area. Because of the large number of sites associated with limestone quarrying and burning recorded in this survey, a greater emphasis was placed on the background study of this industry rather than on the study of the coal mining industry and sites of earlier periods. All the records generated during the course of this survey have been integrated with Dyfed Archaeological Trust's computer-held Sites and Monuments Record. The numbers referred to in this study are the record numbers on the SMR (see section 11 Catalogue of sites).

A near fine unworn, unmarked book in a similar DJ. Abstracts fom the last three hundred years of writing from and about Wales, ranging from eighteenth century travel writing to excerpts from "Rape of the Fair Country".
