Cardiganshire County History Vol 1: From the Earliest Times to the Coming of the Normans., J L Davis & D P Kirby, editors.
3 Cardiganshire County History Vol 1: From the Earliest Times to the Coming of the Normans. J L Davis & D P Kirby, editors.
University of Wales Press. 1994 0708311709 / 9780708311707 First Edition. Hardcover Very Good Very Good
A very good A4-sized 441 page hardback book with owner's name on front endpaper, otherwise unmarked. Book is virtually unworn, DJ has very light rub along top edge. Book is slightly skewed due to poor shelving - this will slowly recover now that the book is properly shelved. 13 chapters in two parts, viz "Land & Environment" and "Archaeology & History". 31 plates, 74 figures, 4 tables, 15 contributors. This is the first volume to appear in the prestigious County History which is being prepared by the Cardiganshire Antiquarian Society. The completed History will consist of three scholarly and handsome volumes designed to present the history of the ancient County from the earliest times to the present day. This volume, for which the editors have brought together a team of eminent scholars, begins with the physical background of the County, its geology and geography and its flora and fauna, and traces the slow emergence of Man in prehistoric times. It reconstructs, from evidence much of which has only recently been uncovered, the extent and character of the Roman occupation, and the routes by which the Romans came in pursuit of their military purposes and imperial designs. It traces the slow emergence of the ancient kingdom of Ceredigion, the nature of its economic and social organization and the growth of its political structures. In this volume also the coming of Christianity, the origins of the churches and the significance of their dedications are fully explored. The volume ends with the coming of the Normans. A unique feature of the volume is that it contains authoritative lists and inventories of the County's prehistoric and Roman remains and early Christian monuments and the 'finds' associated with them. Many of these are illustrated with line-drawings and photographs, as in the inventories of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales - Indeed, both in respect of its scholarship and its production, this volume is worthy to stand alongside the most recent publications of the Royal Commission. This is the first comprehensive and scholarly history of prehistoric and early Cardiganshire. Its launch brings to fruition what many generations of Cardiganshire people have longed for - a County History worthy of comparison with the best county histories hitherto published in England and Wales. Archaeologists and historians generally will find much to interest them in this fascinating volume on a hitherto neglected part of the country.

Castles of the Welsh Princes, "Tank Major" and Eric Wood.
4 Castles of the Welsh Princes "Tank Major" and Eric Wood.
Christopher Davies. 1988 071540699X / 9780715406991 Paperback Very Good No Jacket
A very good large 100 page paperback book without inscriptions or other marks. Clean and tight, virtually unworn, covers a liitle yellowed.. A survey of the castles of the native princes of Wales, as distinct from those built by the Anglo-Norman aggressors. Divided into sections on the Castles of the Princes of Gwynedd, Deheubarth, Powys, and the Lesser Dynasties. With a chronological list of references, a reading list, a note on Welsh heraldry, glossary and index. Many monochrome photographs and line-drawn reconstructions. While these castles are mostly poor efforts when compared to the work of Master James of St George, they deserve their place in our history, and this book is an excellent memorial.

Fieldwork in Industrial Archaeology., J.Kenneth Major
7 Fieldwork in Industrial Archaeology. J.Kenneth Major
Batsford. 1975 0713429291 / 9780713429299 First Edition. Paperback As New No Jacket
176 page A5-size card cover book, new old stock, unworn and unmarked. Several dozen available. Industrial Archaeology is still a relatively new discipline and one with many facets. Kenneth Major's thoroughly practical survey will be equally useful to the serious student and to the enthusiastic amateur. Having first outlined the scope of the subject, the author deals with the many practical skills that the industrial archaeologist needs when working in the field from measured drawing and photography to research, recording and publication. The present pressures of demolition and redevelopment mean that an industrial monument has to be recorded without delay, and even the unskilled enthusiast can make a valuable contribution. The volume is illustrated by the author's photographs, sketches and drawings, which demonstrate the methods that should be adopted by the fieldworker. An architect by profession, Kenneth Major was one of Britain's leading amateur industrial archaeologists.
