Deep-Sea Demersal Fish & Fisheries., N.R. Merrett & R L Haedrich.
7 Deep-Sea Demersal Fish & Fisheries. N.R. Merrett & R L Haedrich.
Chapman & Hall 1997 0412394103 / 9780412394102 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good No Jacket
A very good 282 page hardback book. Owner's initials on front endpaper, otherwise entirely unmarked and unworn, could pass for new. 8 chapters, references, systematic & subject indices, numerous figures & tables in text. The worldwide collapse of commercial fish stocks on continental shelves has led to an unprecedented expansion of commercial exploitation in the deep sea. Unless heed is taken of ecological realities in the deep sea, which are different from those at work in shallower water, management of the expanding deep-sea fishery is doomed to failure. This new book examines the impact of deep-sea fisheries in the light of what we now know about fish, synthesizing recent oceanographic research concerning the individual and community ecology of fishes living on the bottom of the deep sea. The first part of the book describes the general environment, species composition and distribution of deep-sea demersal fish whilst the second part considers the attributes of potentially exploitable species and the problems associated with supporting deep-sea fisheries in a sustainable manner. Deep-Sea Demersal Fish and Fisheries provides an ecological examination of the present state of knowledge about deep-sea fishes and as such will be of value to researchers interested in deep-sea fish ecology and also environmental managers, government scientists and conservationists involved in marine exploitation.

11 Fish Stock Assessment: A Manual of Basic Methods J A Gulland.
Wiley. 1988 0471900273 / 9780471900276 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
A very good 223 page hardback book. Previous owner's initials in corner of front endpaper, otherwise unmarked. Just a touch of rub to corners of DJ, otherwise unworn. 7 chapters, answers to exercises, index, a few figures & tables. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is one of the World's largest publishers in the area of food, agriculture, fisheries, and forestry. Much of this extensive programme is published in the form of technical reports of interest to highly specialized individuals. A certain proportion, however, is of much wider interest and it is the aim of this FAO/Wiley Series to bring such material to the attention of this wider audience. Fish Stock Assessment is the first book in the series, and is based on the experience of FAO in all parts of the world. It is essentially a practical book, designed to enable the reader to make his own assessments of the fish stocks with which he is concerned, and a list of exercises is given at the end of each chapter. At the same time the theoretical basis of the methods are made clear, and the limitations of different techniques are emphasized. The book describes the techniques used in assessing fish stocks, in evaluating the effect of fishing on the stocks, and the likely impact of different policies for developing and managing fisheries. The reasons why scientific advice is needed are briefly reviewed, as are the techniques developed starting with the simple models and progressing to the more complex methods, which require more data and more complex analytic techniques. Invaluable reading for scientists in fishery research and students in fishery science and marine ecology.

Forty Anglers., Donovan Kelley.
12 Forty Anglers. Donovan Kelley.
Merlin Books. 1994 0863036619 / 9780863036613 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
A very good 119 page hardback book, signed by the author on the title page. previous owner's initials in corner of front endpaper, otherwise unmarked and unworn, could pass for a new book. 6 chapters, 3 appendices, index, copious monochrome illustrations. This is a different fishing book, by an author who draws on 60 years' experience to recall some of the anglers whose paths have crossed with his. They are chosen not for any claim to fame (although some are well-known) but for their interest and the experiences which befell them. Among a rich variety of characters will be found the Mad Major, the Lighthouse Keeper, the Naval Pensioner, the Welsh Farmer, the Sindhi Fisherman, the Yorkshire Writer, the Editor of the Fishing Gazette, the Inventor of the Baited Spoon, the Last Chairman of the British Sea Anglers' Society; and last but far from least some of the dedicated anglers who have helped in the author's researches. There are scenes from fishing spots all round the coast from Essex to North Wales, with the rugged shores of West Wales and South-West England featuring prominently. Many of the tales are of bass, with which the author is deeply involved as both angler and researcher. They tell of the disasters as well as the successes. Appendices record some of the achievements of the anglers who help in the researches. They include the discovery of the systematic seasonal movements of the adult bass and identification of the nurseries in which the young bass develop, and of the levels of abundance of successive year-classes. There is an informed assessment of future prospects for the bass angler in U.K. waters in which the author tempers the current favourable omens with emphasis on the need for continuing vigilance, and for a single strong body to watch over sea-anglers' interests.

Journal of Northwest Atlantic Fishery Science Vol 4, July 1983, Michael P Fahay.
14 Journal of Northwest Atlantic Fishery Science Vol 4, July 1983 Michael P Fahay.
Dartmouth, Canada. Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization. 1983 Paperback Good No Jacket
A good near-A4 sized 423 page ex-university library paperback book with the usual stamps & labels. Front & back covers (but not the spine) have been covered for library use in stiff clear adhesive PVC sheet to enhance the durability of the book, and this has worked well. Volume 4, being a Guide to the Early Stages of Marine Fishes Occurring in the Western North Atlantic Ocean, Cape Hatteras to the Southern Scotian Shelf. This guide presents egg and larval descriptions of 290 species of fishes (contained within 92 families, 28 suborders and 13 orders) likely to be collected in plankton and neuston sampling operations in continental shelf and oceanic waters of the Western North Atlantic. Coverage is designed to emphasize species occurring between Cape Hatteras (latitude 35 N) and the southern Scotian Shelf (about 43 N) and includes oceanic mesopelagic and bathypelagic forms. Coverage is also designed to provide (a) as wide a phylogenetic survey of larval characters as today's published record allows, and (b) direct comparisons of confusing species pairs. The latter two considerations result in the inclusion of a few estuarine species or species occurring South of Cape Hatteras. Throughout the taxonomic section of the guide, illustrations are placed on the right-hand page and the corresponding descriptions are placed on the left. Consistency in the descriptions is largely dependent on descriptive information available in the published literature. Certain meristic and morphometric characteristics of adults are included to aid in the identification of larger larvae and juveniles. Special introductory pages, which summarize and compare characters for a number of species, are provided for the families Gonos-tomalidae (including Sternoptychidae), Myctophidae, Paralepididae Carangidae, Sciaenidae, Scombridae and the (sub)orders Anguilliformes Gadiformes, Ceratioidei, Stromateoidei and Pleuronectiformes. Many published illustrations have been redrawn, primarily to correct inconsistencies and errors in the original descriptions, but also to provide uniformity throughout the guide. Introductory material includes explanation pages, a glossary of terms widely used in ichthyoplankton work, a table of larval characters for the 13 orders, and a table of meristic characters (including presence or absence of adipose fin), arranged according to range of myomeres or vertebrae, to assist in the identification of problem larvae.

20 Reef Fisheries. Nicholas V C Polunin and Callum M Roberts.
Chapman & Hall 1996 0412601109 / 9780412601101 First Edition. Hard Cover As New No Jacket
A pristine 477 page hardback book, entirely indistinguishable from new. 14 chapters, references, species & subject indices. Numerous figures, tables, etc. Reef ecosystems extend throughout the tropics. Exploited by small-scale fishers, reefs supply food for millions of people, but, worldwide there are growing worries about the productivity and current state of these ecosystems. Reef fish stocks display many features of fisheries elsewhere. However, habitat spatial complexity, biological diversity within and among species, ecosystem intricacy and variable means of exploitation make it hard to predict sustainable modes and levels of fishing. Reef Fisheries is the first book to give a comprehensive account of the subject. Starting with the biological basis of reef fish productivity it explores patterns and effects of exploitation before examining available means of stock assessment, management and recovery. Specialist authors with extensive experience of tropical reef fish and fisheries have contributed to this valuable work. The range of perspectives on reefs, their biota, their exploitation and fisheries management make Reef Fisheries a useful text for upper level students of fish biology, fisheries researchers, ecologists, conservation biologists, social scientists and fisheries policy makers.
