A very good 412 page hardback book. Owner's name on front endpaper, otherwise unmarked and virtually unworn, possibly unread. 1989 reprint of the 1986 first edition. Very heavily illustrated with 1800 full colour paintings of birds and 214 distribution maps. Two hundred and fourteen species of waders or shorebirds swarm over the beaches, marshes, mudflats, plains and tundras of the world. This impressive guide by a team of skilled field experts is the first attempt to describe and illustrate them all within the covers of a single book. We owe a debt to Peter Hayman, John Marchant and Tony Prater, who have so painstakingly and skilfully portrayed and described the many plumages of the world's waders, some of which had never been illustrated before. If you are not already addicted to the shorebirds, you will be after studying this landmark volume. ** Shorebirds, or waders, are among the most attractive and popular groups of birds in the world. Their appeal is international since their widespread migration means that vagrants can occur virtually anywhere in the world. Yet, until now, existing guides to these birds have been superficial and inadequate, leaving large gaps in current knowledge. Shorebirds: an identification guide to the waders of the world is the first comprehensive review that enables birdwatchers throughout the world to identify any species of wader in the field. It provides the information to help both the advanced observer and the careful beginner to identify not only the species but also, where possible from field characters, the age, sex or racial origin of the bird. A number of important identification features are described for the first time in this book, and both text and illustrations point out the essential details needed to make a positive identification of any species. An authoritative text by John Marchant and Tony Prater— the result of eight years' research— is fully complemented by 88 superb colour plates, painted by Peter Hayman. Over 1800 birds are shown and each plate has a facing caption that is cross-referenced to the main body of the text. In addition, four-colour maps clearly show breeding and non-breeding distributions. This unique handbook belongs to a new generation of fieldguides. Its concise but thorough and scientifically accurate treatment of every species in the world will ensure that it remains the definitive work for many years to come.
