A very good 134 page hardback book. DJ is virtually unworn, book is in same condition except for a small Tippexed area on title page, otherwise all looks like new. Very heavily illustrated, some on colour. This publication brings together the many hundreds of manuscript estate maps, dating from c.1600 to c.1850 in the care of Glamorgan Archives. Such large-scale maps, drawn to define the extent and content of individual estates and farms, provide uniquely detailed records of the pre-industrial landscape of Glamorgan. They contain a wealth of information not only on land tenure and usage but also on field and place-names, domestic and farm buildings, and such varied features of landscape as churches and castles, water mills and windmills, old mineral workings and ancient tumuli and encampments. The maps also illustrate cartographic developments over several centuries and reveal the highly individualistic styles of Glamorgan's surveyors and map-makers. Many of the surveyors whose work is represented in this publication worked in other counties of Wales as well as in England and most of them diversified their activities into spheres far removed from land surveying. The present publication will provide a valuable tool for a wide variety of research projects. The detailed catalogue entries list the title, scale, dimensions and artistic medium of each map. Numerous illustrations throughout the text enable both the content of the maps and the style of the map-makers to be appreciated. In the Introduction to the volume, the author discusses some of the factors which influenced landowners to commission mapped surveys of their estates. New insights are provided into the careers of land surveyors working in Glamorgan, men such as Evans Mouse, William Jones `philomath', William and Thomas Morrice, Edward Thomas and John Williams. And Glamorgan estate maps and their creators are considered against a background of social and economic change and cartographic developments. ** The Catalogue with its Introduction has been compiled by Hilary M. Thomas who was formerly the Assistant Glamorgan Archivist. Her career in the Glamorgan Record Office spanned eighteen years and she has a wide knowledge of the archive collections in that office. She is the author of numerous publications on the history of Glamorgan.
