A fine 116 page hardback book, entirely unmarked and unworn, could pass for new. Full title is "Glamorgan Sheriffs: Biographical Notes on Sheriffs 1966-1993 and Lists of Sheriffs from the 12th Century to the Present Day". Edited by Patricia Moore, Published on behalf of the Glamorgan County History Trust by University of Wales Press in 1995. *** Sections on The Shrievalty in Glamorgan; Biographical Notes on Sheriffs; Lists of Sheriffs; Under Sheriffs. Numerous photographs of local worthies. ** The office of sheriff originated in Anglo-Saxon England, where the sheriff was an officer of the Crown with responsibility for keeping the peace. By the beginning of the twelfth century the Normans had introduced the office into Glamorgan, and the sheriff remained an officer of the Marcher lord until the creation of the county of Glamorgan under Henry VIII. The office of sheriff is still in existence, though its duties have greatly changed, and those chosen to serve are no longer drawn exclusively from the landowning families which dominated local affairs in the past. This volume gives short biographies of all those who have been sheriff in Glamorgan and its three successor counties between 1966 and 1993. A complete list of the sheriffs of Glamorgan from the twelfth century to the present day is also included, along with a list of under sheriffs from Tudor times, and a description of their duties by John Otto-Jones. ** Patricia Moore, OStJ, BA, FSA, was formerly County Archivist to Glamorgan County Council and to the three successor counties of Mid, South and West Glamorgan. She is currently Hon. Archivist to the Welsh Historic Gardens Trust and to the Priory for Wales of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, and editor of Archaeologia Cambrensis. She was co-editor, with George Williams, of High Sheriffs of the County of Glamorgan, 1541-1966 (1966) and is the author of several other titles published by Glamorgan Archives.
