A fine 120 page landscape-format hardback book; Both book and DJ are unmarked and unworn and the whole could pass for new. Very heavily illustrated. ** In the years immediately following Waterloo, George Orleans Delamotte, a young and talented artist, came to live at Briton Ferry near Swansea, where for a few years he enjoyed the patronage of several wealthy gentlemen living in the vicinity. He was a skilled topographical artist and a sketch book of his which is now held by the West Glamorgan Archive Service contains many accurate and pleasing views of south Wales, focussed on Briton Ferry and the Swansea area. He was a member of a family which produced several noted artists, but despite his talents George Delamotte has received little mention in published directories of artists, appearing only as the brother of the more succesful William, and with even his birth and death dates unknown. Although this book describes in detail his landscape sketches in south Wales, it goes beyond that to record his skills as a topographical artist in both watercolour and oil painting, and also as a painter of miniatures, and as an art teacher to the families of the gentry. The origins of the distinctive prints based on his sketches of the local scenery are also revealed. In addition the author's careful research has resulted in the presentation here of the first account of the artist's long, mobile, and interesting, if sometimes turbulent, life. As well as presenting these sketches of south Wales as it was before the vast changes of the last two centuries, in this book Bernard Morris brings out of the shadows the life and work of a talented artist who has been overlooked too long.
